What to expect when taking your CPC exam for the first time:

CPC exam for the AAPC:

The CPC (Certified Professional Coder) examination consists of questions regarding the correct application of CPT, HCPCS Level II procedure and supply codes and ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes used for billing professional medical services to insurance companies.

What does the CPC exam consist of?

The exam has 150 multiple choice questions.
It takes 5 hours and 40 minutes to finish the exam.
You can take one free retake if you do not pass the first time around.
The fee is $300.00 and $260.00 for AAPC students.
*It is an open code book (manuals).

*Approved manuals for use during you CPC exam are:
CPT Books (AMA standard or professional edition only).
Your choice of ICD-9-CM
Your choice of HCPCS Level II

Important note:
You are not allowed to bring any electronic devices (cells phones, tablets, etc.) into the exam room.

What to expect when taking you CCA exam for the first time:

CCA exam for the AHIMA:

The CCA (Certified Coding Associate) examination is based on ICD-9-CM codes effective October 1, 2011 and the CPT codes effective January 1, 2012.

What does the CCA exam consist of?

The exam has 100 multiple choice questions (90 scored and 10 pretest items).
It takes 2 hours to finish the exam.
The fee is $299.00 and $199.00 for AHIMA members.
*It is an open code book (manuals).

*Approved manuals for use during you CCA exam are:
Only the American Medical Association CPT codebook is permitted.
HCPCS II codebooks and ICD-9-CM codebooks containing HCPCS national level II codebooks are not permitted for this examination.
